Healthy diets key to getting kids’ mouths healthy

Preventing cavities in your childs mouth isnt just about developing good brushing habits. While its still important to make sure kids understand good oral hygiene, monitoring a childs diet, in addition to regular dental visits, is key to keeping cavities at bay.

Dr. Charles Fields, owner of Fields Family Dentistry in Upper Allen Twp., said acidic diets and sugar are behind a rise in oral deterioration in children.

Were seeing a lot of kids with decay and its not one cavity, its four and five, said Fields, who has been treating patients for 27 years.

India reports new TB strain resistant to all drugs

It’s not the first time highly resistant cases like this have been seen. Since 2003, patients have been documented in Italy and Iran. It has mostly been limited to impoverished areas, and has not spread widely. But experts believe there could be many undocumented cases.

No one expects the Indian TB strains to rapidly spread elsewhere. The airborne disease is mainly transmitted through close personal contact and isn’t nearly as contagious as the flu. Indeed, most of the cases of this kind of TB were not from person-to-person infection but were mutations that occurred in poorly treated patients.

Study: Preschools Forgo Free Play for Safety, Academics

Jan. 4, 2012 — Kids need to be kids, and that includes running and playing throughout the day. But, many preschools and child care centers are so focused on safety and academics that kids are not getting the activity they need to be healthy.

Many children in preschools and child care centers are spending most of their day — 70% to 83% — being sedentary. A mere 2% to 3% of their day is spent in doing “vigorous activities,” according to background information cited by a study from the journal

With as many as 75% of all preschool-aged children spending time in a child care setting, the implications are clear.
