Tuberculosis on the rise

Each year, 8 million new cases of tuberculosis (TB) occur worldwide, and 3 million people die of the disease.

Reports of TB worldwide had been on the decline, but in 1985 this trend reversed. The reversal is attributed to the epidemic HIV. The incidence of TB among HIV patients is 40 times higher than among the unaffected population. Immigration of people from areas with high prevalence of TB is the main contributing factor in the spread of the disease.

Smokers are also at increased risk for the disease. People with COPD smoking 20 cigarettes a day are two to four times more likely to contract TB than nonsmokers.

The Obama administration claims health insurance companies won’t have a problem providing free contraceptive coverage for women who work at religious groups. Officials say that’s because it is much cheaper for the industry when pregnancies are planned.

 

Free heart-healthy cooking lessons offered

Cooking heart-healthy food isn’t so hard if you know how.

So, the American Heart Association is offering free classes to encourage people to cook low-cost, heart-healthy meals at home.

The demonstrations will be offered Nov. 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Baltimore International Culinary College, 210 S. Central Ave. in Baltimore. There will be free parking, prizes, cookbooks and tastings.

Patients in California may find a shuttered glass door the next time they seek out emergency care, as hospitals across the state close emergency rooms.

California hospitals that serve large numbers of blacks and Medicaid patients, who often rely on ERs the most, run a higher risk of closing the emergency department, according to an analysis just published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.
