BDA To Launch Comprehensive Clinical Guide For Practising Dentists At Showcase, UK
This expanded guide contains six new chapters, including one on common medical and surgical conditions affecting the older patient. Metabolic disorders, skin disorders, psychiatry, cancer, radiotherapy and chemotherapy have also been covered for the first time in this latest edition. The authors, Professor M Greenwood and Dr JG Meechan, have revised existing chapters on the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine and the musculoskeletal systems. The practising clinicians have also updated the content of the original sections covering neurological disorders, liver diseases, renal disorders, haematology and paediatrics. Commenting on this latest guide, the BDA’s scientific adviser, Professor Damien Walmsley, said: “Patients seen in dental practice often have an underlying medical or surgical condition that need to be taken into account by the dentist when drawing up treatment plans. Dentists also have to be aware of potential drug interactions and side effects of medication used to treat these conditions to avoid potential problems. “However, treatment regimens change and the challenge for dentists is keeping up to date with these: this guide helps to fill that gap. “The new chapters on older patients and those with cancer or psychiatric conditions are a particularly welcome addition, because until recently the oral health needs of these groups tended to be neglected.” The latest edition of the guide is now available in a hardback format. BDA members can buy the guide at the discounted price of £35, otherwise the purchase price is £60.
