Planned activities in senior homes

The key to the residents happiness living in a senior citizens center is the quality of the social educational and entertainment programme on offer. This is something that must be enquired about before settling on the right place to live, or for your relative to live. If there is one thing that the residents will have more than enough of, it is leisure time. And it would be a sad thing if, after a lifetime of hard work, a person finally has time to themselves only to find that it hangs heavy on their hands. Boredom and depression can easily follow on from lack of meaningful, enjoyable occupation.

All their needs are taken care of physically, and due to ageing joints or other ailments, the residents may not have sufficient motivation to undertake any sort of exercise on their own, and in any case the opportunities to do so may be limited.

Therefore the existence of an interesting programme is not an optional extra, but an absolute essential. Participation in the programme should not be forced, although it is important that people are welcomed in to the activity if they do want to take part. Older people do need to be treated as individuals able to make their own choices though, and so there has to be sensitivity to a person’s reluctance: they should not be over-persuaded to take part.

In some cases, people may be open-minded enough to take up pursuits that they have never attempted in their younger lives. In others they will very much want to assert their long-standing tastes. Everyone is different. Some elders may want to spend a lot of time simply reading, and it is important that this is facilitated with large print books being available, and also ‘talking books’ with headphones where appropriate. In all cases though, it is important to maintain as much physical activity as possible and acceptable to the resident, as exercise promotes well-being mentally as well as physically.
