Loss of STAT1 transcription factor causes breast cancer development

Breast cancer represents about a fifth of all cancers diagnosed in women. The reasons for the rapid progression of the disease remain relatively poorly understood but recent work in the group of Veronika Sexl at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna has pointed the finger strongly at loss or inactivation of the transcription factor STAT1. The results are published in the current issue of the journal Oncotarget.

The so-called signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) are involved in the regulation of cell division but details of their functions remain a matter of conjecture.

Health fair, bass tourney memorial set for Saturday in Belle Glade

This Saturday in the Glades will be a busy one, from the 11th annual Glades REACH Fair to a bass tournament and dinner in honor of the late Jimmy McMillan. Both events showcase what this community does best – helping those in need.

REACH stands for Rural Education, Awareness and Community Health. The fair, sponsored by Glades Planned Approach to Community Health (or PATCH) and other health organizations, offers an array of free medical services to area residents.

Last year, more than 800 Glades residents attended the health fair and received medical attention.

It’s an event the community waits for.
